Functional Taping

Functional Taping

Sometimes, reducing joint pain and muscle pain can be difficult. It's possible that you have so much inflammation in the area that your efforts to reduce pain are thwarted daily. If this is the stage you're at, you may want to try functional taping. This technique uses very flexible and stretchable tape that also has the effect of lifting your skin a bit. At BodyWorks Chiropractic in Euless, TX, we provide functional taping in addition to a variety of other chiropractic care methods. Our chiropractor, Dr. Danielle Harkins, provides acupuncture, massage therapy, and other forms of pain relief to help your body heal.

What Is Functional Taping?

Functional taping is a form of athletic tape therapy in which a special tape is placed in particular spots around an area of your body that is experiencing pain, such as from joint injuries or muscle injuries. If you've ever seen athletes with what looks like colored masking tape on their legs or arms, this is athletic tape. Functional taping is one form of athletic taping. There are a number of forms. In functional taping, the goal is pain reduction, and the tape is supposed to lift the skin just a bit, but enough to create extra space under the skin.

How Functional Taping Works

The idea with functional taping is that the inflammation that you're experiencing is restricting blood flow and creating pain, and by lifting the skin a bit, you make it easier for blood to flow through these formerly constricted areas. Essentially, creating that extra space lets your body function as if the inflammation has receded, even if it technically hasn't.

The tape adhesive is strong enough to withstand water for a few days, and the tape itself moves with your joints and skin instead of restricting movement. The treatment might need to be repeated for a few weeks, but you should notice that your joint pain or muscle pain has been reduced. As a result, you may even find other therapies beginning to work better, simply because your motion isn't as limited by pain anymore. Functional taping alleviates muscle pain, joint pain, sports injury pain, and more.
